At the heart of every research endeavour lies a burning question—a curiosity that demands exploration. In the realm of IT implementation projects, challenges are abundant and widely recognized. Yet, despite escalating investments, organizations frequently find themselves realizing less value than anticipated. It’s against this backdrop that the Industrial PhD project, titled Adoption Management 2.0, emerged. Initiated in January 2022 with approval from Danish Innovation Fund, the project aims to delve into the complexities of modern adoption management.
our approach and methods
Action Design Research in Real-Life Contexts
This project is not just an academic pursuit; it’s a quest to make meaningful contributions to practitioners and organizations. An Industrial PhD is a collaboration between academia and practice and for us it has manifested in the iterative and explorative action design research approach. Over the past 2.5 years we have diligently engaged with scholars and professionals to comprehensively grasp the complexities surrounding enterprise software adoption. Through this ongoing collaboration, we have developed theories aimed at addressing these challenges head-on.
Current Findings
Mandated Software Is a Wicked Problem
Research is not a straight path and we have found ourselves in several uncharted territories along the way. As the journey has progressed a key finding has emerged: when software is mandated, adoption is a complex socio-technical dynamic and calls for a nuanced approach to its management. This research is currently encapsulated in two articles and a research-in-progress paper, all of which have been accepted for publication at reputable Information System conferences. Upon the completion of the Industrial PhD Project, we will present two additional articles that signify the culmination of our solution space and showcase our theory-driven solution artefacts.
